“Musicians used to be seen as the voice of the people – we were knee deep in protest songs and sweary attacks on authority.

“But as programmes such as the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent have slowly taken over from sweaty pubs as the route for young singers and bands to hit the limelight, so the message they carry has become milder in tone.

“Perhaps it’s time to listen to poets again?”
