1st Thanksgiving w/one’s college kid


(poetry diary 103) One of my co-workers told me yesterday how sad he felt after dropping his freshman son back at college after Thanksgiving break.  He wondered whether other parents felt the same way.

Here’s a poem by Sharon Olds in which she expresses similar feelings:

First Thanksgiving
Sharon Olds
When she comes back, from college, I will see
the skin of her upper arms, cool,
matte, glossy. She will hug me, my old
soupy chest against her breasts,
