She awoke / to find her fishtail / clean gone

(poetry diary 99) my father-in-law is in the hospital again so I’m looking for hospital poems. I’ve been thinking a lot about James Dickey’s “Hospital Window” but it’s too sad for the situation, so I’m instead posting a lighter one  that has nothing really to do w/my own situation, just because:

The Mermaid in the Hospital
Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, translated by Paul Muldoon
She awoke
to find her fishtail
clean gone
but in the bed with her
were two long, cold thingammies.
You’d have thought they were tangles of kelp
or collops of ham.
