Prayer Rug + “Poems of Muslim Faith and Islamic Culture”

(poetry diary 54)  I wanted to post a poem about Ashura yesterday, but I wasn’t able to find one that helped explain the complicated Muslim holiday in the way that the one I found on Yom Kippur seemed to do.

I did find the Poetry Foundation’s good page on Poems of Muslim Faith and Islamic Culture, though.  It includes this poem:

Prayer Rug
Agha Shahid Ali 
Those intervals
between the day’s
five calls to prayer
the women of the house
pulling thick threads
through vegetables
