Slam poetry saves lives


Hamilton star Daveed Diggs speaks of how Spoken Word poetry helped save his life.

“I was really aware, even while it was happening, that the discovery of arts education in my life sort of saved my life,” Diggs said. “As a kid, you don’t have a ton of spaces where you are honored, where what you think is honored, and what you say is revered.”

[James] Kass started Youth Speaks in the mid-1990s to provide an avenue for younger generations, particularly children of color, to vent through poetry and spoken word performances. At the festival this week, young adults from across the country — and from as far away as the United Kingdom and South Africa — have been forming bonds through the rhythmic cadence of their words.
